SHAVINGTON SCOUT GROUP

The unwritten rule for Scout Leaders is "Keep 'em busy!" and since our last report we have been doing just that!

In February a group of Beavers and Cubs enjoyed the village pantomime.

March was very busy. We held a Coffee Morning at Nantwich Parish Rooms and a Prize Bingo evening at Shavington Primary School on the same day! These 2 events raised over £400 for Group funds. Thanks to everyone who supported us.

Beavers enjoyed a sleep-over at Forest Camp, Sandiway where they completed their Global Challenge and other activity badges.

Beavers and Cubs who had achieved their highest Award during the past year attended a District presentation ceremony. The Beavers were: Matthew Mills, Joe Salisbury, James Critchley, Calvin Arnold, Ben Hassall, Alexander Amery and Adam Harwood. Cub Silver Award winners were: Andrew Geldart, Bethany Merrill, Lol Muirhead and Joe Parkinson.

We were given a donation of £500 recently by Direct Rail Services towards the cost of a new floor for the Scout Hut. DRS regularly support local community youth organisations. Mr Norman Egglestone from Carlisle came to present the cheque, and spent time chatting to the youngsters and Leaders.

Scouts are entering 2 teams in this year's Cheshire Hike. This is an annual weekend challenge for teams of 2 Scouts. They must complete a planned route, navigating with maps and compasses and carrying everything they will need for the 2-day expedition. All without their Leaders! Lots of practice beforehand is necessary to ensure they are capable of achieving this challenge. They have been polishing their map-reading skills, learning what essential equipment to take, cooking their own meals on hike stoves and pitching tents as well as walking long distances carrying all that equipment. We wish them well on 9/10 April.

Also in April we will be attending St Mark's Church to commemorate St George's day. St George is the patron saint of Scouts as well as of England, and the nearest Sunday this year coincides with Easter Sunday.

Plans are well in hand for our District Camp which takes place from Friday 29th April (now Royal Wedding Day) until Sunday 1st May. Lots of exciting activities are planned - we just need the weather to be kind! The theme of this camp is "Space" and there will be representatives from many Groups from within our District. Such events are always memorable for all who attend.

And now that the longer days are upon us you can be sure that our members will be out and about as much as possible both during their normal weekly meetings and additionally at weekends too!
